The City of Madison’s Electric Trash Truck Naming Election
In March of 2017, the City of Madison became the 25th city in North America to set a goal of achieving 100% renewable energy and zero-net carbon emissions for city operations by 2030. Integral to this mission is adopting cleaner fuel vehicles through out it’s municipal fleets. Madison began using an electric fire truck in 2021, and recently unrolled a new “bus rapid transit” system utilizing 62 fully electric buses.
On September 17th, 2024 the City announced two electric refuse trucks are joining the fleet; The very first fully electric class 8 garbage trucks in the state of Wisconsin! Collecting Trash may be messy business, but these additions will be offering cleaner alternatives for our Capital City. These EV trucks are quieter than the current diesel powered models in use, and produce no tailpipe emissions. Madison citizens will reap the rewards of improved air quality (which is shown to reduce heart disease and asthma rates), and quieter trash collection mornings.
On September 25th, City officials invited the public to tour and name the two new trucks. Suggestions have been pouring in from around the capital, leaving Wisconsin Clean Cities readers with a dirty dozen to make the final votes on. Please help us break the tie by voting below!
