Please do not smoke or vape anywhere on Jones Island. \nTours will begin in the Maintenance Building\, Training room A (We will send you a detailed map upon RSVPing) \n \nJones Island is a peninsula formed at the mouth of the Milwaukee River. \nHistorically\, Jones Island was a marshy strip important to the Potawatomi\, which served as a summer village. As the frontier community grew\, schooners and steamships found the winding natural inlet difficult to navigate. The Army Corps of Engineers created a harbor channel through the peninsula in 1857. This “straight cut” temporarily separated the peninsula from the mainland. The resulting island became known as Jones Island after James Monroe Jones\, who had opened a shipyard there in 1854. Jones Island became the main center of the city’s commercial fishing industry.  Attracting immigrants\, a clinic was soon built on site for the fishermen afflicted with cholera\, accompanied by incineration facilities to help clear the garbage causing infectious disease. \nBy end of the nineteenth century\, the nearby Illinois Steel Company\, hoping to expand their docking facilities\, acquired Jones Island and constructed a new wastewater treatment plant and updated the harbor facilities. The Hoan Bridge was erected in the 1970s to span the length of Jones Island as part of freeway efforts to connect the city’s downtown and south side. Waves gradually sealed the river inlet with sand and restored the peninsula. Typically\, there are six to seven classrooms where a subject related to energy is discussed (solar\, robotics\, etc.) WCC’s classroom will be about Electric Vehicle Technology. Our classroom is usually held in the Auto Tech Classroom/Shop or outside. In the past\, an average of 150 kids from surrounding schools converged on Madison Area Technical College. Brief presentations are held in the auditorium to kick off the event. After that\, groups of about 20-30 students are assigned to each classroom. There are 6 to 7 rotations\, 25 minutes each\, starting around 9:30 am. Each group has at least one or more “teachers” and a “guide”. The guide keeps time and helps the group transition to the next station. The teachers for WCC are usually from an auto dealership\, power utility\, and the local workforce board.  Each teacher has about 3-5 minutes to tell the students about careers in their field (auto techs\, designers\, fuel providers\, salespeople\, etc. and the skills needed for those jobs).  The purpose of the presentations is to get the youth thinking about careers.  We then let the kids explore the cars brought to the event.  They get to sit in the vehicles and look under the hood\, etc.  It is one of the more exciting classrooms for the kids because it’s quite hands-on. \nA full agenda will be forthcoming as we get closer to the date. Join us for a guided tour of their innovative\, award-winning institution\, including the background of this historical location\, with a review of the many restorations\, renovations\, and sustainability investments made at the Campus since its acquisition. \n \nWgema campus is a gated facility with a 43\,000-square-foot underground parking structure and features state-of-the-art security.  The surveilled underground parking structure leads to a vestibule\, directly across from the Wgecheda building\, which features a stone council circle and a statue of a Native American warrior seated beside a fire before its entrance. Once you are within the gated facility\, you will be directed by uniformed guards on where to park and how to enter the event venue. There are two entrances we recommend to drive into the facility: \n\nGate #2 on 32nd and Kilbourn\,\nGate #3 on 33rd and Wells.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nWgema campus was originally built in 1881\, then known as Concordia College of Milwaukee\, a renowned academic institution that graduated many notable scientists\, politicians\, and athletes. The gym facilities hosted the Milwaukee Bucks.
